Regina residents awoke to find the John A. Macdonald statue in Victoria Park vandalized with green and yellow spray paint Friday morning.
By late afternoon, the City of Regina issued a statement saying “crews will be dispatched to remove the graffiti from the statue once (they’ve) determined the best approach for removal without disturbing the statue.”
The City added it’s too early to estimate the cost of the clean up.
Over the years, Macdonald’s monument has been a target for vandalism.
In 2012, the statue’s face was painted red.
Last summer, it was covered by a white sheet and yellow police tape. It acted as a symbol while the Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism held a teach-in, indicating people needed to learn about the history of Canada’s first prime minister and how he treated Indigenous peoples.
A petition has also circulated asking for its removal.
Macdonald’s statue was first installed in 1967.
