Tait family legacy: Sask. curler to honour father at Brier

As Canadian curling fans look forward to this year’s Brier, veteran Regina curler Jeff Tait is looking back.

Tait played in the 1998 Canadian men’s curling championship in Winnipeg.

On Saturday afternoon, he will participate in this year’s opening ceremonies alongside other Saskatchewan curlers who have played in past Briers.

“It should be fun. It’s great to support this Brier and recognize everybody who’s been there from Saskatchewan in the past,” Tait said.

Since his late father, Moe Tait, played in the 1977 tournament, he said he plans to bring along his dad’s old team jacket to carry on his legacy at the event.

“I’d like to, with his team, get a picture of me wearing (the jacket) to round out the team and honour Dad at the same time,” he said.

Tait added he will never forget his dad — who he describes as his biggest mentor, coach and fan — cheering him on while he played in the 1998 Brier.

“He was definitely there as a proud father,” he said. “A lot of what I’ve done in the sport is because of his guidance.”

Moe passed away in 2013.

This year’s Brier opening ceremonies start at 12:30 p.m. at the Brandt Centre.
