A Saskatoon police officer was sent to hospital Monday night after a lengthy scuffle with fleeing suspect.
It started just after 9 p.m. in the city’s near Avenue P South and 11th Street in the city’s West Industrial District. Police said they spotted a suspicious vehicle, and started chasing it.
The vehicle was later found to have been stolen from Kindersley.
Police said the suspect tried to run on foot, jumping a fence and making his way to the front of a business on the 600 block of Avenue O South. At that point, he started fighting with a pursuing officer.
The officer tried to taze the suspect, but that didn’t work.
After several minutes, a passerby entered the fray, and helped the officer until backup could arrive.
Police are reminding the public not to interfere in a case like this, but are extending their thanks to the passerby regardless.
The officer was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The 24-year-old suspect is facing charges including flight, assaulting a police officer causing bodily harm, carrying a concealed weapon, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for being unlawfully at large.
The man will be in court again Thursday morning.
