From a Disney ‘Tale as Old as Time’ to a journey through Middle Earth, the Globe Theatre stage will move between fantastic worlds and dramatic portrayals of historical events this coming season.
Regina’s theatre-in-the-round announced its program lineup for the 2018/2019 season.
Mamma Mia – Sept. 19, 2018 to Oct. 14, 2018
The season will open in September with the rollicking ABBA musical ‘Mamma Mia’ about a girl secretly inviting her three possible fathers to her wedding. The Little Mermaid director and choreographer Stephanie Graham is returning to the Globe to direct the musical.
The Hobbit – Nov. 28, 2018 to Dec. 23, 2018
The big family production for the holiday season will be a stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s classic fantasy novel about a hobbit who goes on a fantastic journey with dwarves and a wizard.
“We’re going to go off into Tolkien’s world and the world of hobbits and trolls and dragons and elves and it’s going to be really fun,” commented Globe artistic director Ruth Smilie.
Bed and Breakfast – Jan. 16, 2019 to Feb. 23, 2019
The comedy Bed and Breakfast by Canadian playwright Mark Crawford was a script that really stood out to Smilie when she was on an awards board for the Playwright’s Guild of Canada.
“It’s two actors playing multiple characters, it’s really physically based theatre,” Smilie said.
She described it as a comedy with very sweet emotional moments.
Gracie – Feb. 27, 2019 to March 17, 2019
Gracie is a Canadian play written by Joan Macleod about a young girl growing up in a polygamous community like Bountiful, B.C. She starts to question her beliefs when she reaches what the community conisders the marriageable age of 15.
Making Treaty 4 – April 10, 2019 to April 28, 2019
Making Treaty 4 is a collective interpretation of the historical and modern significance of signing Treaty 4.
Jesse Archibald-Barber at the First Nations University of Canada is heading up the project which also has a link to a fatal car crash that killed four members of the local arts community in 2015.
“When Michele Sereda, Narcisse Blood, Michael Green, and Lacy Morin-Desjarlais were killed in the car accident in February of 2015, they were on their way to Piapot to begin a conversation about Making Treaty 4,” Smilie explained. “So after that tragedy everything was put on hold.”
Another group involved in a similar production about Treaty 7 in Alberta reached out to Archibald-Barber.
“Jesse offered a university class in making Treaty 4 and they created sort of the foundation of the production and they later did another workshop production of it in August,” Smilie explained.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast – May 22, 2019 to June 16, 2019
The Globe will finish off the season with the family favourite musical Beauty and the Beast adapted from Disney’s hit animated movie about Belle who offers to take her father’s place as prisoner in an enchanted castle.
