Mark Docherty has the job of ensuring Saskatchewan’s politicians behave themselves and follow all the rules.
The Regina MLA was elected as speaker of the Saskatchewan legislature on the final ballot.
The Saskatchewan Party’s Docherty was elected in Regina Coronation Park in 2011.
Docherty has been public about his challenge with multiple sclerosis (MS), a diagnosis he was given in 1998.
It was probably the reason why the traditional dragging to the speaker’s chair was gentle in nature than is traditionally the case.
There were seven names on the ballot with Moose Jaw’s Warren Michelson out first, followed by Batoche’s Delbert Kirsch and then Lloydminster’s Colleen Young, all of whom are on the Saskatchewan Party side.
On the fourth ballot there was a tie for the lowest votes, with the NDP’s Danielle Chartier and the Saskatchewan Party’s Glen Hart both knocked out.
Eric Olauson was defeated in the final round.
It was a busy and lengthy first day back for the provincial politicians, not only was a new speaker elected, but three new MLAs were sworn-in.
