There was nothing left of the cow but its insides.
Roy Goodwin’s father found the gruesome mess Wednesday morning.
Goodwin and his father raise cattle near Weyburn. On Wednesday, Roy’s father got a call from a neighbour that the cows were out. So he headed out to round them up, and found the culprit was a portion of fence that was down. While he was out he decided to check the mineral feeder, but on the way there he found it.
“He drove in right towards the mineral feeder, and found a large pile of guts,” said Goodwin.
Goodwin believes the thieves killed and butchered the pregnant cow right there in the field, then loaded up the pieces, leaving the guts and calf fetus behind.
He said it was a clean job.
“They were prepared, they knew what they were doing.”
On Saturday, Goodwin didn’t yet know which cow it was that had been stolen, but it was a big loss for him.
“I’m out a good bred cow, and next year’s calf, and if she was young she might have raised me another five or six calves.”
Goodwin is now interested in getting some security for his herd, like game cameras.
A police report was filed. Goodwin said everyone in the area is on high alert, looking out for anything suspicious.
“If these guys get caught by the wrong guy, it’ll be bad for them.”
