For the 31st year, Z99 stayed awake to help save babies lives and raised $718,243.
The annual fundraiser has the Z99 Morning Crew — CC, Lorie and Cassity — staying up for 36 straight hours to raise money for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Regina General Hospital.
The life-saving equipment can mean the world to families who require it, including Jocelyn Robinson’s daughter Blake who will be in the NICU for 100 days this Sunday.
The Melville mother said she and her family got to Regina on the second day of labour.
“It would’ve been two full days of labour at the hospital and they were trying to keep her in as long as possible and they gave me some steroids and stuff to mature her lungs and brains,” Robinson said.
Blake would be born on Dec. 8, over three-and-a-half months early and weighing just one pound five ounces.
“Before I went into labour they said she had a 50-60 per cent chance of making it so that was very scary for us.”
Jocelyn was warned there would be a honeymoon period where it would appear like she was doing fine.
“Then everything started to go downhill, she had bleeding in her brain, she had a heart murmur and she got pneumonia, so it was scary for sure,” Jocelyn said. “She made it, she’s such a fighter actually.”
Jocelyn said her husband has been a great support system for her.
“There was a couple times when it was really hard when she had bleeding in her brain and they didn’t know if she was going to have severe brain damage or not, that was really scary,” Jocelyn said through tears.
Blake will have chronic lung disease due to being on the ventilator.
Blake has been doing well recently, however, with the only issue being with her feeding at this time.
“She’s having issues taking her full bottles currently.”
Jocelyn is hopeful Blake will be ready in three weeks to go home.
