Mild weather not deterring some from ice fishing

While the milder temperature is a welcome treat for many of us, it’s not everyone’s ideal weather for this time of year.

“Oh, I’d love to see it colder. Of course, I don’t want to constantly walk on the ice the whole entire year,” admitted Mathew Gelowitz.

He was getting set to go ice fishing on Last Mountain Lake at Regina Beach Thursday afternoon. Unlike two men who decided to go out in their truck on the lake near Collingwood Estates earlier this week, Gelowitz walked out.

“Nobody should be driving out yet and when it is time to drive on, I think there’s going to be a lot of vehicles going down this year just because the way the ice formed and it’s tons of huge cracks.”

He insists he goes ice fishing nearly every day during the winter months. As Gelowitz appropriately put it, he got hooked with the sport when he was a boy with his dad. He knows his ice. That’s why he’s confident footing it out onto the lake.

“This ice is really, really clear. It’s still fresh, it’s solid, it’s not soggy and it’s eight inches. There’s open water and cracks everywhere. Just avoid them,” he stated.
