NHL general managers want to look at the possibility of expanding the number of teams in the playoffs.
You see, with Las Vegas coming in and the likelihood of Seattle coming soon, you’re going to see 32 NHL teams fighting for 16 playoff spots.
Well, there are those who think the NHL can take a page out of the MLB playoff picture to have play in games to decide the wild cards to give four more teams a chance at the post-season.
Why?
The NHL already has an 82 game season. How is that not enough to decide who the playoff teams should be?
If there is a tie for the final spot, sure, go nuts, but the NHL season is long enough.
And having half the teams make the post-season and half the teams not… actually makes sense.
Hopefully, this idea doesn’t get too much support but if a GM can get another shot at proving to his bosses that he can get into the playoffs, it’ll get more support than it deserves.
