Taj Smith of the Saskatchewan Roughriders was briefly back in court Monday morning on his aggravated assault charge, before the case was quickly adjourned once again.
Lawyers and the judge agreed to set the matter over to Jan. 18, for the decision of a voire dire. A voire dire often examines certain evidence to see if it’s admissible to use in a trial.
The trial was originally scheduled for Dec. 14 to 16 this year but both Crown and defense lawyers needed more time to prepare. No new trial date has been scheduled yet.
Smith was charged after an incident outside a Regina nightclub on Dewdney Avenue in August 2013. Two other former Riders — Eron Riley and Dwight Anderson — were also charged, but have since had those charges dropped.
Smith only played the first three games of the 2015 season before the team shut him down. He’s set to become a free agent in February.
