Volunteers search areas around Kenaston for missing woman

Volunteers are scouring areas around the Village of Kenaston in an effort to find any sign of Sheree Fertuck.

Fertuck has been missing since Dec. 7 when she was last seen leaving her family’s farm in a gravel truck.

Her mother previously told CKOM News that she found the truck at a nearby gravel pit the next morning with Fertuck’s jacket, cellphone and the keys still inside.

On Tuesday, a group of volunteers joined the local search and rescue team to do a grid search of an area designated by the RCMP.  One team was sent to Horseshoe Lake, about three-and-a-half hours east of Kenaston.

Emergency Management Organization coordinator Gene Whitehead said they had about 50 people involved in the search. He said teams were using snowmobiles, quads and trucks to check fields and vacant buildings.

With Fertuck missing for so long under such suspicious circumstances, Whitehead said everyone was just trying to stay positive.

“You expect the worst and hope for the best and you don’t give up until you’ve exhausted all avenues of search or resources,” he said.

Whitehead said they would keep working in the coming days until they’ve cleared the area marked out by the RCMP. He said they would keep working further as needed by police.
