The Jingle Bus jingled with donations in Regina throughout the weekend.
Regina Transit announced that riders donated $6,063.20 over the three day Jingle Bus promotion. Rawlco Radio matched the generosity for a total of $12,126.40 which was presented to the Salvation Army and Regina Food Bank on Tuesday.
“It is truly amazing to see our city come together and help others in need,” said Mayor Michael Fougere. “The Jingle Bus program has exceeded our expectations and I’m so proud to be a part of this caring community. Thank you, Regina.”
The City of Regina and Rawlco Radio partnered to offer free bus service to residents from Dec. 18 to 20. Instead of paying the regular fare, riders were encouraged to donate their coins into the farebox with all proceeds going to the two charitable organizations.
The Salvation Army that is helping 1,500 families this year.
“This year we are giving out a lot of hampers and so this will go to help pay for that,” explained Val Wicks.
The food bank’s Steve Compton said the money goes a long way, “for every dollar you donate we are able to provide about five meals”.
The food bank is seeing about 9,500 individuals come through their door each month.
This was the first year of the Jingle Bus program.
