On Sunday Ilya Kovalchuk became an NHL free agent.
Remember him?
The last time he was an NHL player he retired with 12 years left on his contract, only to sign a mega-deal in the KHL.
But now the question, who would want him and what risk do you take in a 35-year old player who has backed out of contracts and played the back and forth game from NHL to Russia’s KHL?
He was and maybe still is one of the purest goal scorers. But in the NHL today, it’s a game that is going younger and faster and Ilya Kovalchuk is definitely a different player now than he was 10 years ago when he scored 52 goals.
Someone will take a shot, probably a team like Arizona or Carolina or maybe even Florida who try their best to pay to the cap floor, rather than the ceiling.
For the right price, it may be hard to turn down a likely 20-plus goal scorer, or better.
There is a lot of baggage with Kovalchuk so it will be interesting to see just how hot the sweepstakes.
