Regina police chief concerned about recent robberies

There have been a number of robberies of businesses over the last week in Regina.

In each case between April 9 and April 15, a man, or men, with weapons walked in demanding cash. In one of the robberies the man had a knife, but in all the others the thief either had a gun or led the people working to believe he had a gun.

That’s “frustrating” and “a concern” for Regina Police Chief Evan Bray.

“In some cases, we’ve been able to make arrests and hold people accountable, in other cases we haven’t made arrests but have been able to link two or three robberies being connected in some way,” Bray explained.

It is particularly frustrating to RPS as it had made a number of gains in recent years in reducing the number of armed robberies in the city.

Bray said it would take “swift action” to tackle the issue because more than likely a robbery offender will repeat the crime if not caught the first time.

He is also concerned about public safety, and any person in a business that might think to tackle a suspect in a robbery.

“Often times the people committing these crimes are high or intoxicated and so they’re not making good, clear, sound decisions clearly by the act of the robbery itself and we want to try and keep people as safe as possible.”
