The blame game is always quick and can get pretty ugly. Toronto Maple Leaf fans are going through all of those post-mortem emotions.
Yes, Freddy Andersen was terrible in net in game seven. Jake Gardiner was worse. And Auston Matthews was invisible for most of the series, to the point you’d think he may be suffering from a pretty significant injury.
But can we bring Toronto back to reality? They’re good.
Andersen is a good goaltender. Auston Matthews is only 20. Mitch Marner and William Nylander are also young players who you can clearly rely on for years to come.
Tweaks are always necessary and change will come but the team Lou Lamorillo and Mike Babcock are putting on the ice is one of the most respectable groups Leaf fans have seen in a long, long time.
While another game 7 collapse against Boston is going to hurt, it shouldn’t hurt as long as the one in 2013 did.
There will be a next year and Toronto will once again be a team to be reckoned with and as this core matures and more pieces added, long playoff runs are coming… and soon.
