Leo McGee came to the University of Regina in the 1980s and built up the University’s wrestling program to the point where they were national champions.
They’ve also won multiple Canada West championships, the latest being in 2012.
Now, it’s dead.
The program, both the mens and womens, were two teams slashed by the University of Regina on Monday.
We knew changes were coming. A recent report said that maintaining 16 teams was no longer sustainable. So they piled up the accomplishments, the budgets, recruiting and even to how the program is perceived around the school.
Wrestling and the mens volleyball team ended up at the bottom of the pile, to leave the University with 13 programs. Something they say better aligns them with schools of similar size.
But when you look at the wrestling, the stories this season were of athletes going to nationals, winning medals at U Sports tournaments as well as the national junior championships.
Leo McGee and his staff were continuing the tradition of solid Cougar wrestling right to the end.
