Darrell Davis: MLB is striking out

Baseball keeps getting more boring.

As MLB teams research launch angles, swing trajectories and bat speed in pursuit of home runs, there are fewer hits. Worse, there are more strikeouts as pitchers take advantage of the hitters’ all-or-nothing approach.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, one-third of plate appearances through April’s MLB games ended without putting a ball into play. They ended with a walk, a hit batter or a strikeout. For the first time in the sport’s history, for one month the players had more strikeouts than hits.

From the Dead Ball Era to the Live Ball Era to the Steroid Era, this is now the Strikeout Era. And it’s incredibly boring with fewer hits, stolen bases, double plays and jaw-dropping defensive plays. Fifty years ago, when pitchers became too dominant, baseball lowered the pitcher’s mound. That would be a good start, then teach the hitters some old tricks, like bunting, choking up on the bat, how to be a contact hitter…
