RCMP in Green Lake used a drone to locate the body of a missing snowmobiler late last month.
According to the RCMP, the missing person was reported to the Green Lake detachment April 30 after a witness saw a local man driving his snowmobile out onto the ice of Dore Lake. The witness lost sight of the snowmobile and rider, RCMP said, and feared the worst because the ice was beginning to become thin.
After checking the snowmobiler’s home, RCMP followed the snowmobile tracks out onto the lake but said they found no tracks leading off of the ice.
The search had to be called off when it got dark, the RCMP said, and Saskatchewan Conservation Officers and members of the Big River SERM office arrived to assist when the search resumed the next day. A drone was flown out over the lake, the RCMP said, and the drone located the deceased snowmobiler in the water near the shoreline.
The body was recovered and identified as the missing rider, RCMP said, though they did not identify the deceased.
