Police are handing some decision-making power over to the public when it comes to traffic enforcement.
This week the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) plans to introduce a new traffic program allowing the public to suggest areas in Saskatoon where officers should focus on traffic enforcement.
Starting Tuesday, Jan. 19, and running weekly, a newly launched Twitter account will use the social media’s polling tool, allowing Twitter users to suggest three locations for potential traffic enforcement.
Twitter users will have 24 hours to vote on that poll and the location that receives the most votes will be subject to enforcement on the following day and report the results. The initiative will be governed by the hashtag #SlowDownYXE.
“Road safety is an important priority for the SPS and we often have people offering suggestions of where they would like to see us,” said Staff Sgt. Judy McHarg with the traffic unit. “We see this initiative as a way to give them that opportunity and further engage with our community on a larger scale.”
