Outlaw Motorcycle Club member charged in Saskatoon murder case

RCMP confirm both the accused and the victim in a 2014 Saskatoon murder case belonged to the Outlaws Motorcycle Club (MC).

John Glen MacAulay, 46, made his first appearance Monday morning in Saskatoon Provincial Court, charged with the second-degree murder of Norman Playter.
 
According to police, the victim was visiting Saskatoon in May 2014 just days before he died. MacAulay, who is from Ontario, had been living in Saskatoon at the time.

A few months after Playter’s death, Saskatoon police announced that an Outlaw MC chapter had set up shop in Saskatoon, consisting of about seven full-patch members at the time. Det. Insp. Jerome Engele said the club consisted of both locals and people who had moved into the province.

“The Outlaws are a brotherhood and not a criminal organization,” the club’s Canadian website reads. “We are a group of men united to ride, and have fun.”

But when Engele spoke to CKOM News in 2014, he said the club was a criminal organization involved with drugs and extortion.

“They may call themselves what they wish but in the end its a group of people that are banding together and not obeying the laws of the land,” Engele said.

The Outlaws are established in other Canadian cities with chapters throughout Ontario and Newfoundland. Engele said the club expanded out west because of the prosperity. There is no indication if the men belonged to the Saskatoon chapter.

MacAulay was remanded in custody until next Monday to allow him to speak with a lawyer.
