Estevan RCMP officer killed in rollover

An Estevan RCMP officer has died and another was injured in a single-vehicle rollover while off-duty.

At 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, RCMP responded to the collision involving a car around 1.5 kilometres east of Lampman on Highway 361.

The initial investigation has revealed the car was travelling eastbound, left the road and rolled.

The driver, a 55-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene and a 27-year-old man was taken to hospital.

RCMP confirmed both men involved were members of the Estevan RCMP detachment.

They were not on duty and were not driving an RCMP vehicle at the time.

RCMP will not be identifying the two members at this time.

An investigation is being done into the cause of the collision. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

Corporal Rob King said services will be brought in to help members of the detachment on a case-by-case basis.

“Luckily for us we have our chaplain services, we have our own mental health services,” he said.

King added the RCMP will be sending additional officers to help alleviate the workload so members can begin to process what has happened and begin to grieve.

While he hasn’t talked to members form the detachment, he said any type of workplace death can take a toll on someone.

“These are people that you worked with and saw everyday, and suddenly they’re not there today,” he said.

“There’s definite shock and definite grief.”
