Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement. The advisory covers the entire southern half of the province with the exception of the southwest.
Meterologist John Paul Cragg said a low pressure system developing in Alberta will push warm air into the province Tuesday evening bringing a mixed bag of precipitation to southern Saskatchewan.
“With it, we’ve got a band of freezing rain that will form around North Battleford and the Meadow Lake area, and then move … along Highway 16 all the way into Yorkton,” Cragg said. “With this band of freezing rain we’re expecting some poor driving conditions and that’s why we put out the statement.”
In addition, snow is expected north and east of the freezing rain system, with five to 10 centimetres expected over portions of eastern Saskatchewan overnight.
Cragg said the freezing rain will reach Saskatoon sometime overnight and continue tracking southeast into Manitoba.
He said warming temperatures overnight will melt some of the precipitation, adding drivers should prepare for slippery conditions Wednesday morning.
