The score may not look good on the surface.
A final score of 35-12 tells a tale of a much more dominant team, the Edmonton Eskimos over the Roughriders, but every year in the pre-season we have to remind ourselves who was in and out.
The Riders had 10, if not 11 of their starting 12 defensive players out of the lineup. The Eskimos only had one starter on offence out of the lineup and Mike Reilly and gang came out like they should against back-ups and were up 14-0 really early.
Yes, there are questions about the depth along the offensive line but they were there before the game and will continue until the first few weeks of the season.
No, we didn’t see the top two quarterbacks and I’m still curious to see how comfortable Zach Collaros will be in the final pre-season game within this offence and how Brandon Bridge challenges the starter.
The game was exactly how it should have been, a more veteran team beating up on a team made up of back-ups and rookies. All four of us on the Green Zone predicted an Eskimos win after seeing the rosters.
So no concern here from pre-season week one. We’ll get a better sense of the Riders 2018 edition when they host Calgary in two weeks.
