Series of break and enters lead to 19 charges for Regina man

From tools, to cars, to mail – a 23-year-old Regina man is being charged in series of robberies that happened in the last half of January.

The investigation began on Thursday, Jan. 21 when officers found a stolen Honda Civic on Cardinal Crescent in the south end of Regina, near Wascana Centre. The car had been stolen in an overnight break and enter the week before, just a block away.

The Civic had tools and other stolen property in the back which were linked to a break and enter a few days earlier from a garage on the nearby 3300 block of Grant Road. According to police, thieves likely got into the garage through an unlocked door.

Police got several reports of break and enters and thefts that Thursday.

A break and enter was reported that happened overnight on the 1800 block of Grant Road. Tools and a Cadillac were stolen from the garage. Police said the keys had been left inside the Cadillac.

Another break-in was reported, this one on Mayfield Road near University Park Drive in the southeast part of the city. Police say mail from another address on the street was found on the garage floor. When officers went to the address on the mail, the resident told them someone had been in her garage, locking the overhead garage door.

Lastly, another robbery was reported on Sommerfield Drive, near Mayfield Road – this one happened in the early morning hours of the same day. According to police, the thieves used bolt cutters to enter a locked shed, then left the bolt cutters in the unlocked garage. The thieves managed to get into the house while the people inside slept, stealing clothes, a purse, and pieces of mail.

Police learned a white Cadillac, matching the description of the one stolen from Grant Road, was seen in the area of Michener Drive and University Park Drive near where the second two robberies took place.

Then, later on the Thursday, police got a report of a suspicious man who had been driving a white Cadillac. Officer watched the vehicle, then arrested the man inside. Police say there were several things found in the car that were later found to have been stolen from the home on Sommerfield Drive.

Andrew James Debruycker, 23, is being charged on 19 counts: two counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000, four counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, three counts of break and enter to commit theft, break and enter with intent, theft under $5,000, possession of a controlled substance, breach of undertaking, and six counts of breach of probation order.

Debruycker made his first appearance in court on these charges last week.

Police are taking the opportunity to remind people to remove valuables from their vehicles, and ensure garages are locked.
