More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
It’s that time of the year again, to get out the gear and play rugby in the snow. The only problem? There’s almost no snow.
For decades, the Condor rugby club in Regina has held their “Snow Sevens” tournament every winter – its main fundraiser for the year.
“Winter’s not the same without this,” said Madeline Berry, one of the players in and organizers of the tournament.
Berry called the lack of snow a bit disappointing.
“It’s kind of the big game-changer, you know, you get all dressed up in all your gear and you go and try and play rugby with mitts on, and it doesn’t work.”
She explained snow can make the game more challenging.
“It’s a lot harder to run through, like, knee deep snow and try and actually do things in the snow … you get tackled and you don’t even feel it because you’re just landing in a bunch of snow.”
About 10 teams registered for the tournament on Saturday.
Harrison King is the president of the rugby club. He said their rugby season usually starts once the snow is off the ground in the spring, but, if the snow stays away, they could get out early this year.
“Oh yeah, it’s beautiful, global warming’s actually come through for us this time,” he joked. “Normally we get out April, but if we can get out in March that’d be awesome.”
