Pride Week festivities kicked off Friday to celebrate Regina’s LGBTQ community.
Over ten days, people are invited to take part in daily events, organized by Regina Pride and other community organizations, that focus on highlighting the community’s culture, history, achievements and struggles.
The Queen City Pride Parade will take place June 16 at noon.
One of this year’s parade grand marshals is Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan.
“We wanted to be able to praise the work he has done for being vocal in the public eye,” said Regina Pride co-chair Jesse Ireland.
The Regina-born NFL player, who doesn’t identify as LGBTQ, has spoken out against homophobia within the football league. He’s also publicly called out bigoted fans of his on social media.
“Quite often people in that position tend to keep quiet on subject matters, especially about human rights,” Ireland said.
“He has a great support from many people in Regina and we want to see that (support) go all the way through the NFL.”
The parade route takes people down Victoria Avenue, Broad Street, College Avenue to finish at Wascana Park.
Other events include activities in Wascana Park and the Pride after Dark Party.
The schedule of events is on the group’s Facebook page, Twitter and website.
