If one good thing came out of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ final preseason loss, it’s that head coach Chris Jones was madder at his team than the fans were.
Jones criticized the blocking of his offensive line and his players’ lack of intensity. He also should have been irate at the penalties taken by his veteran players, particularly Duron Carter, during Saskatchewan’s 39-12 loss to the visiting Calgary Stampeders.
The porous blocking led to shoddy performances by quarterbacks Brandon Bridge and Zach Collaros, who got rocked from behind in the third quarter and ended his night.
It was just a preseason game, so the only casualties were the dozens of players cut during the weekend to abide by the CFL’s roster restrictions. The players remaining need to block better, take fewer penalties and pump up their performances by Friday, when the reigning Grey Cup champions, the Toronto Argonauts, open the regular season in Saskatchewan.
