Its become a father’s day weekend tradition.
No, I’m not talking about heading out to play a round of golf or heading out for brunch with the family or the hand-made craft your kid made at school.
I’m talking about watching golfers complain about the U.S. Open — the course, the setup and the men and women who run the United States Golf Association (USGA).
This year didn’t disappoint as Ian Poulter, who is never shy about an opinion, took to Twitter to take a cut at USGA President Mike Davis.
But it wasn’t uncalled for. Davis apologized, in a way, about the third round conditions for the course that made the top players in the world look average.
And this is why sitting down and watching the US Open is not one of my father’s Day traditions.
No thanks.
The course again was a fake. The rough grown to a ridiculous length, fairways shortened, and greens trimmed to play like a newly paved driveway. In two weeks if you played Shinnecock Hills, you’d likely think it unrecognizable to what it looked like for the pros.
Pebble Beach hosts next year. It’s a course that is just naturally challenging, rather than one faked to be that way. Yes, the rough will be grown long, however that is a USGA tradition.
Maybe I’ll watch, maybe I won’t. I’m just as happy hanging out with the ones that call me “dad.”
