The CP Canadian Women’s Open is two months away and on Monday I got a sense of how much pressure is on the Canadians to win their national tournament.
Only one Canadian has won it and that was in year one when the field was a little less impressive than the one we’ll see in August.
Brooke Henderson’s likeness is about 20 feet tall on the way into the course. Her face is on the door and all promotional material. She played Sunday and was flown to Regina Monday to take part in interviews and sponsorship events.
She says the trophy casts a large shadow and like any good hockey player, the former goaltender wouldn’t touch the trophy.
But if there is a player who can handle the pressure, it’s likely Henderson. At the age of 20 it was impressive to see a humble, humorous and polite young woman who has been pushed by Golf Canada as the face of women’s golf in Canada since the age of 15.
She’ll be a crowd favourite and it would be nice to see a Canadian at the top of the leaderboard for the first time since 1973.
