Flower frenzy: more pots planted in Regina this summer

Colour is once again filling Regina’s streets as the city plants more flowers.

After an $18,000 budget cut and only planting 100 pots in 2017, the City of Regina has brought back that money and is planting 400 once again.

“The one thing that residents really let us know as the city is that they were really unhappy with the reductions in the flower program,” said Russell Eirich, manager of forestry, pest control and horticulture.

He said they’re mainly putting the flower pots on boulevards to liven up the grey cement.

The flowers include petunias, geraniums and some fancier plants that can grow to be about five feet high.

Mosquito count still below average

Regina residents haven’t had to deal with too many pesky mosquitoes this summer.

Eirich said a lack of standing water in Regina is causing fewer mosquito eggs to hatch.

One trap is catching an average of 12 mosquitoes a week, as opposed to the historical average of 20.

However, their two traps outside of the city in Zehner and Balgonie are getting much more action at an average of 148 mosquitoes a week.
