From a bitter supporter of the eliminated German team at World Cup, soccer didn’t need anything else to slow down the game.
Yet FIFA, soccer’s governing body, decided this year’s World Cup would be a good place to implement VAR — Video Assistant Referee. VAR overruled an offside call and allowed a disputed goal by South Korea in a 2-0 victory that ousted Germany, the reigning champion. Germany joins Italy and Spain as the third straight World Cup champion to be eliminated in the subsequent qualifying round. Yes, it was the right call, but there’s nothing wrong with letting the officials make mistakes, just like the players do.
Like all sports that use video review, soccer is trying to eliminate major mistakes by its officials. If soccer had VAR, we would never have Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal in 1986 nor Geoff Hurst’s “Phantom Goal” that gave England its only World Cup in 1966. Video review is going to ruin soccer, too, even though it’s already been ruined for Germany’s fans.
