Double celebration: Regina’s Somali community marks Canada Day

Not only does July 1 mark Canada’s birthday, it also marks Independence Day in Somalia.

Regina’s Somali community was in Wascana Park to show their culture with Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mark Docherty.

“Today, here, we are celebrating the Somali and Canadian day together,” said Mohammed Ali, a Canadian citizen who’s been living in Saskatchewan for the past six years.

Two young boys, Nassir Mohamed and Ahmed Mustafa, were sitting behind a table that held Somali creations, such as mixing bowls, and explaining their uses.

Both boys emphasized the peace they feel in Canada.

“(Canada is) a peaceful country, like there’s no violence or anything like that. People aren’t separated by the way they are,” said Mohamed, adding how accepted and free he feels here.

Mohamed lived in Canada his whole life.

“Canada means peaceful times and respect … it’s a peaceful country and everyone is nice,” said Mustafa.

Docherty was dressed in Somali clothing. He said their display of culture in the park represents Canada’s greatest strength: diversity.

“It speaks to what an amazing country we have in terms of valuing diversity, and then being inclusive and making sure people feel welcome,” he said.

The group sang Somali songs and gave guests a taste of their cuisine.
