Funnel clouds liven up Sask. skies

The land of living skies certainly lived up to its name in parts of the province Tuesday.

Environment Canada confirmed it received quite a few reports of funnel clouds in the Kindersley and Battlefords area as well as around Yorkton. Meteorologist Dan Fulton said one did touchdown near Otthon, Sask., which is located just south of Yorkton.

Fulton said the funnel cloud that touched down only did so for about a minute and didn’t cause any damage.

That sort of unstable weather is expected to continue Wednesday.

“It’s still kind of an unsettled air mass over the area,” Fulton said, adding it’s hard to predict if a funnel cloud will form. “You kind of need the right mix of sun and cloud and instability.”

He said the clouds don’t provide a severe weather threat, with most funnel clouds not reaching the ground.

“Even if they do touch down, they’re usually quite brief and not super strong winds in there.”

After Wednesday, Saskatchewan will be moving into a stable pattern of dry, hot weather — temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s C by the end of the week.
