Darrell Davis: How about those touchdowns, Roughriders?

Oh boy, in two weeks the Saskatchewan Roughriders play the Hamilton Tiger-Cats again.

Hopefully, they’ll bring along their offences and score some touchdowns. There wasn’t an offensive touchdown scored in Thursday’s CFL game until two minutes were remaining when tailback Marcus Thigpen rambled 34 yards for the winning major in Saskatchewan’s 18-13 victory.

The win might appease Rider Nation, but it doesn’t answer many questions about Saskatchewan’s anemic offence. It didn’t help that the Riders played yo-yo with quarterbacks Brandon Bridge and David Watford, alternating them with little rhyme or reason. Neither was particularly effective and it’s going to be interesting if the Riders continue using the same philosophy after their bye week.

The Roughriders’ defence is also unpredictable, but it’s effective. Saskatchewan’s defenders moved into various positions and the Riders took special care to make sure Hamilton’s primary weapon, wideout Brandon Banks, wasn’t isolated against fledgling cornerback Duron Carter. And with a 57-yard fumble return, Riders defensive end Charleston Hughes scored one more touchdown than Hamilton.
