On July 5, 2017, the CFL announced that Randy Ambrosie would be the new Commissioner.
A year later and Ambrosie is about to embark on something that could define him as a leader in the CFL with a player background.
The league and the players will need a new contract going into the 2019 season and there will be some big things to negotiate, whether it be the salary cap, the option window re-opened for NFL opportunities or player safety.
Ambrosie already won people over last season with his changes to the coaches’ challenge. That has not only improved the flow of the game but it’s also taken the spotlight off of the refs and there is a lot less talk of officiating errors on our show.
Ambrosie is also teasing Atlantic Canada with a group looking seriously at bringing in a 10th team.
We’ve seen the league take on new endeavours by enhancing Thursday Night Football and halftime shows trying to appeal to a younger audience.
But with the players union and members talking tougher than ever before, Ambrosie’s leadership to keep the game on the field with a fair deal could be his ultimate legacy.
