Powerful flash storm wreaks havoc around Regina

Powerful wind snapped trees like match sticks and heavy rain caused drivers to pull over in Regina Friday afternoon.

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Dan Kulak, wind speed reached 111 kilometres per hour at times around 4 p.m.

After that, the storm system moved east of the city.

With the severe thunderstorm watches and warnings making rounds in Saskatchewan lately, Kulak is reminding people — especially campers — to watch out for lightening.

“You really should be finding some more sturdy shelter to go to, a firmly constructed building — or even your own vehicle,” he suggested, adding it’s the metal roof that can save you from a lightening strike.

“Not rubber tires, not rubber footwear — you need to get into that metal shell.”

Kulak said, in Canada, lightening kills more people than any other natural disaster each year.
