For a football team woefully lacking depth, the bye week was an excellent opportunity for the Saskatchewan Roughriders to add some players.
This is a team using a receiver in the defensive backfield and whose only backup offensive lineman is a defensive lineman. So what did the Roughriders do when they resumed practising after 10 days off? They re-signed a special teams player.
No offensive linemen. Nobody who can replace Duron Carter at cornerback. A special teams player for a roster that already includes eight defensive linemen and nine linebackers!
There are some areas of strength. No rivals have a better combination of defensive ends while second-year veteran Crezdon Butler is among the CFL’s best defensive backs. Marcus Thigpen and Christion Jones are multi-purpose weapons when deployed properly. But it seems like the Roughriders missed a perfect opportunity to add some depth, to sign somebody who could upgrade a roster whose vulnerability will be on display again Thursday in Hamilton.
