More adult players are now investing in the protective equipment.
If weather or an upset stomach from too many mini-doughnuts forces fair-goers inside, the Queen City Ex has a wide variety of exhibits and shows happening indoors.
One of the exhibits is a trip back in time with the Memory Lane attraction. The exhibit, located in Banner Hall, features many different items and photos from past fairs.
Rollie Bourassa is helping with the Memory lane exhibit and has been going to the Regina fair for 55 years.
He remembers Royal American shows which would arrive by train to the city.
“People would wait for that train, I would too, and watch them unload all the heavy equipment and set up the rides,” Bourassa said.
He said he can remember stars like Bob Hope and Art Linkletter coming through the fair.
“The top recording stars would come because there wasn’t any television then, really, so these people just crowded in to see them,” Bourassa said.
This year Memory Lane will also feature something Saskatchewan Roughrider fans will have fond memories of: the Gainer-mobile. The little Toyota would drive around Taylor Field when the Riders would score a touchdown.
“People want to come and climb in and have pictures taken,” Bourassa said.
Along with amazing exhibits, the Queen City Ex also offers many different shows happening throughout the day.
One of the new shows happening at this year’s edition of the fair is the Saskatchewan Science Centre’s Matter of Facts show.
The show explores all the different states of matter and how they can interact with one another.
“We’ll look at density, we’ll look at what happens when you can move a whole bunch of air at once and then we look at chemical reactions too,” said Jesse Searcy, outreach programs coordinator with the Science Centre.
He said one of the experiments people will want to see is when they create what they call “elephant toothpaste.”
“We’re going to be taking a whole bunch of hydrogen-peroxide, adding a catalyst to it and making a giant chemical volcano happen on the stage.”
The show is running all week and can be found in Exhibit Hall A of the International Trade Centre.
The Queen City Ex runs till Sunday.
