Fust sisters help U of R Cougars get off to a flying start

The Fust sisters have led the Cougars to a 7-1 record as they face Mount Royal on Thursday.
A man who confessed publicly to defacing the statue of John A MacDonald in Regina’s Victoria Park has been arrested and charged with mischief.
In a phone interview with 980 CJME Friday Patrick Johnson said he painted the hands on the statue of Canada’s first prime minister red to symbolize an ongoing legacy of violence and systemic racism towards First Nations people.
“I’m not trying to erase history, I’m trying to talk about it and get a balanced expression of it so that we can make an informed choice going forward,” he commented Friday.
When asked why he resorted to painting a statue instead of making an official complaint to the city, Johnson said the official channels were all established by the people that are the problem.
At the time Johnson also said he felt it was important to come forward so the act was no longer anonymous. He said he was prepared to follow the consequences to their logical conclusion.
“Yes there is potential for retribution but it can’t be any worse than living with what the situation is now, because by people not doing anything it just decays further and further,” Johnson said.
In a news release, Regina Police said they began the investigation in response to a news story then arrested and charged Johnson with mischief under $5,000.
