Aaron Rodgers and Odell Beckham Junior have gotten some big money over the last week.
Beckham landed a contract to make him the highest paid receiver, while Rodgers followed that up with the biggest per year salary in the history of the NFL.
And you can put to rest the ridiculous talk that the NFL is being threatened by the player protests and dropping popularity.
Aaron Rodgers deal also gives the salary landscape a little more common sense because we can all look at Rodgers and understand why he is the highest paid player. He’s won a championship and league MVP awards. Something the other top five highest paid players have not.
Atlanta’s Matt Ryan, Minnesota’s Kirk Cousins, San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppollo and Detroit’s Matt Stafford round out the top five. Ryan is the only one you think belongs after getting the Falcons to the Super Bowl a few years ago.
But as I’ve learned covering sports, don’t try to make sense of why a player gets paid what they do.
‘It’s not what you’re worth, it’s what you negotiate.’ Because realistically, is any athlete really ‘worth’ $33.5 million dollars per season?
