Exchange student takes on U of R, starting with the big move

Back to school–university style–is officially in the works, which for many requires packing up their lives to move on campus.

For Andrea Furlong, the University of Regina’s Move In Day on Friday eased off a lot of pressure.

Furlong is an exchange student from Mexico City.

“I thought that I was going to be more nervous or homesick, but I’m really excited,” she said.

The Kisik Tower lobby was filled with snacks and balloons while students and their families streamed in carrying suitcases and laundry baskets filled with belongings.

There were also pops of bright yellow T-shirts in every glimpse, worn by ambassadors who carried everything in for their fellow students.

“Since we got here, like in the parking lot, all the people were so nice and they gave me like ‘You need to go here,’ all the steps in order to get established,” said Furlong.

President and Vice-Chancellor Vianne Timmons said she’s meeting students from around the world.

“We have them all,” she said. “I was just speaking to someone from South Korea, I’ve met someone from Brazil, someone from Mexico, and I’ve met people from Moose Jaw, Saskatoon and all kinds of places.”

The back to school kickoff doesn’t stop at just one day–activities take place over the next week.

As for Friday, the U of R is holding a BBQ Friday evening for residents and their families, with the Rams home opener also taking place at 7 p.m.

Classes officially start on Wednesday.
