While the University of Regina Rams got the bounce-back win they needed, they might’ve lost their all-time leading rusher in the process.
Running back Atlee Simon left the game due to injury in the first half and would not return to the field.
While the offence sputtered after losing Simon, they found their groove with a strong second half to defeat the University of Alberta Golden Bears 51-13.
Despite dominating the game early, the Rams couldn’t find a way to pull away from the Golden Bears in the first half of the game.
The Golden Bears defence bent but wouldn’t break early in the game.
The Rams got out to an early 9-0 lead in the first five minutes, but the Golden Bears kept battling their way back.
Regina found a way to open up their lead in the first quarter to 11, the Golden Bears would once again claw their way back, thanks to a couple of field goals and a Brad Baker touchdown pass, at one point only trailing 14-13.
The Rams once again found the back of the end zone in the second quarter after Bennett Stusek caught the first touchdown pass of his career. Stusek made Rams history in their previous game, with the Campbell Collegiate product becoming the first Rams receiver to start straight out of high school.
Noah Picton, who passed the 10,000 career yards mark against Calgary, threw for two touchdowns in the first half, though he threw two interceptions in the second quarter.
Those turnovers allowed the Golden Bears, who were out-gained 273-116 in the first half, to keep it close and enter halftime with only an eight-point deficit 21-13.
The second half proved to be a much different story.
Picton lead the Rams down the field to begin the half, finding Stusek with a 46-yard deep ball. Picton finished the drive off himself, running the ball into the end zone.
The Rams would take control of the game throughout the entire second half, with Picton throwing his third touchdown of the game. With the game in control, Picton left the game in the fourth quarter after throwing for 449 yards. He now sits fourth all-time in U Sports history.
The Ram outscored the Golden Bears 30-0 in the second half.
Wide receiver Ryan Schienbein caught three touchdown passes in the contest, moving into sixth place for touchdown passes in school history.
The Rams defence held the Golden Bears to under 40 yards of rushing throughout the entire game.
Regina will look to string together back-to-back wins as they welcome the UBC Thunderbirds at Mosaic Stadium on Sept. 14.
