Over 3,000 stuffed animals were tossed onto the ice.
A convoy of trucks made its way down Highway 1 and Highway 11 towards Regina Saturday morning in support of Special Olympics Saskatchewan.
Chelsea Fidler, the non-profit’s director of marketing and development, said the money raised from each truck involved funds Special Olympics sports programs. Down the line, she added, these programs have the power to help shift peoples’ negative opinions about athletes with intellectual disabilities.
“It increases (athletes’) confidence and their abilities and their employment — that kind of stuff. I think it just changes the culture,” Fidler explained.
“(The programs) really change our athletes’ lives — and more than just our athletes; it really does help reshape our community.”
Two groups of trucks — one from Swift Current and another from Saskatoon — left for Regina around 8:30 a.m.
Both covoys were led and followed by Saskatchewan Law Enforcement Torch Run officers.
A barbecue will be held at Regina’s Turvey Centre around noon, followed by a truck pull competition at 1 p.m.
