A former NHL star who is no stranger to Saskatchewan was back in the Queen City Wednesday.
Wendel Clark, who was the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the early ’90s, paid a visit to the College Park II Retirement Residence for a fundraising event. Several hundred people attended the event where Clark told stories about his career along with posing for pictures and signing autographs.
And what’s the question he gets asked the most?
“Doesn’t matter the age, it’s when are those Leafs going to turn it around? The avid one is when is that team going to get better,” he explained.
Clark said he hopes the team is on the right track now, with a number of new younger players in the lineup each night who he’d like to see help the struggling team take the right strides in the future.
Clark is originally from Kelvington and played his junior hockey with the Saskatoon Blades in the Western Hockey League. He described how it’s always great to come back home, and even though it’s a big province, in many ways, it’s still small.
“You’re always running into people that not necessarily knew me, but knew my relatives or my dad or my mom.”
The hockey player was helping to raise money for the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism. The non-profit group serves to improve the quality of life for seniors in the province.
