From a five-star hotel in Seychelles, at a luxury resort on the Indian Ocean, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) approved lifting the ban on the world’s worst drug offender, Russia.
Nine of WADA’s 12 delegates decided Russia was no longer banned from international sporting events, despite evidence that 1,000 Russian athletes in 30 sports had been involved in state-sponsored doping programs. Russia was suspended in 2015; its clean athletes had to compete under a neutral flag at the most recent Olympics. The sanctions were supposed to continue until WADA was allowed access to Russian athletes and the Russian hierarchy had confessed to the violations.
The rest of the world is screaming loudly that this is a terrible affront to the world’s clean athletes. Indeed, it is. Russia has been given the authority to test its own athletes and bid again on hosting international competitions. If this sounds like something the crooked International Olympic Committee would approve, remember the IOC finances and controls half of WADA.
