A horse stabled near Saskatoon has contracted a highly contagious virus.
Officials with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) confirmed Friday the animal has contracted the neurological form of Equine Herpes 1 (EHV-1).
EHV-1 is a common virus that normally presents as a mild respiratory disease. The condition becomes much more serious when it attacks a horse’s nervous system.
While the disease can spread easily among horses, llamas and alpacas it poses no risk to humans.
The WCVM reported that staff were working with the stable to monitor and treat the affected animal. The stable’s management have placed the facility under a voluntary quarantine.
