It has been a long time since there was a Liberal MLA in the Saskatchewan legislature. But Darrin Lamoureux is hoping to the change that.
The Saskatchewan Liberals leader believes people need a third voice in the legislature because the current opposition isn’t working.
“The Cam Broten NDP opposition haven’t held the government accountable,” he said from his Regina campaign office.
Lamoureux isn’t holding any illusion conceding that Brad Wall win. But he believes he has a team in place that can become the official opposition.
“We have great candidates and these candidates are working hard and bringing back the Liberal brand in every community,” he explained. “We have a grassroots campaign and it is working, it is effective and we will have success come election night.”
The platform features a pledge to reduce the number of MLAs in our province to 48. It promises more money for health and education and a reduction in poverty.
Wall has begun a different, more combative tone with the new prime minister over issues like equalization and the carbon tax. Lamoureux believes a Liberal MLA will build bridges.
“With the conflict that Brad’s having right now with Ottawa and the spending and with the allocation of funds, we can provide a friendly voice that can fight for the infrastructure dollars that we need.”
Lamoureux is running in Regina Pasqua, a constituency with a new name and boundary that has no incumbent. He was raised mostly in Regina but spent time in B.C. and has close connections to Winnipeg. His brother is a federal MP there.
But come Labour Day, Lamoureux promises Rider fans, he bleeds green.
