45 per cent jump in stolen vehicles: police

Police are asking people to use more than a single theft-deterrent after an uptick of stolen vehicles in Regina.

To date in 2018, the number of stolen vehicles has jumped 45 per cent compared to 2017.

Investigations into the thefts have shown thieves have been able to unlock and start vehicles using altered keys. Hondas are often targeted by thieves using this method but Acuras, Nissans and earlier Ford models have also been reported stolen using the technique.

Police said a steering wheel locking device cannot be beaten by an altered vehicle key.

While all vehicles are susceptible to theft, owners should take measures preventative measures to minimize theft opportunities.

Some of the strategies police encourage are:

• Use a steering-wheel locking device, such as The Club, which makes an altered key ineffective
• Always lock your vehicle doors
• Do not leave your vehicle running unattended
• Park your vehicle in well-lit areas
• Remove valuables from your vehicle, including spare keys or key-fobs and garage door openers. Spare keys left in vehicles can be altered by criminals to commit additional vehicle theft.
