A 28-year-old Nova Scotia man is facing charges after allegedly failing to pull over for a check stop near Lanigan Wednesday morning.
Around 9:30 a.m., Canadian Pacific Rail police, along with Mounties from the Lanigan, Wynyard and Watrous RCMP detachments, were doing a check stop along Highway 16 when they waved a van over.
“The van entered into the check stop area, but instead of coming to a stop accelerated, jumping over the curb nearly hitting a police officer. The van fled the check stop eastbound on Highway 16 at a high rate of speed,” Lanigan RCMP wrote in a news release Friday afternoon, adding no one was hurt.
After checking the licence plate number, officers learned the van was stolen out of Lloydminster, Alta.
RCMP said members tried pursuing the van, but stopped due to “public safety reasons.”
A short time later, the van was located stuck in a field — that’s when Mounties arrested the 28-year-old.
He’s now facing a number of charges — including assaulting a peace officer, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
He will make his first court appearance Oct. 10 in Saskatoon.
