First day of October brings snow to Sask.

The first day of October brought snow to parts of southern Saskatchewan, including Regina and some to Saskatoon.

The snow is melting as it hits the pavement, so road conditions are not severely impacted inside the city. However, drivers will need to find snow brushes to clear off their vehicles.

Early Monday morning the Highway Hotline reported winter driving conditions with the highways around Regina all wet and subject to freezing.

Mark Melsness is a meteorologist with Environment Canada and said the snow accumulations so far are very light, with only about one centimetre reported in Regina.

“Anything is heavy for the first of October but it doesn’t look like a great deal,” he said early Monday morning.

While the current weather system is expected to clear up quickly, there could be more snow on the way for the south overnight on Monday and Tuesday.

“We are watching another system though that’s going to be pushing into southern Saskatchewan tonight, so that’ll be spreading some more snow beginning this evening in the southwest and then pushing across through Regina – Yorkton areas during the day tomorrow,” Melsness explained.

Depending on the temperature and if the snow changes to rain, he said there could be as much as two to five centimetres accumulated in some areas by Tuesday.

While Saskatoon did get a light skiff of snow Monday morning, the city should escape the worst of it over the next few days.

The snow is mainly expected to hit areas along Highway 1 if it stays on course.
